In 1819, Riddle's family moved from Champaign County, Ohio, to Washington County, Illinois. In October 1822, after his mother's death and his father's re-marriage, Riddle's family relocated to Sangamon County, Illinois. In 1840, Riddle married Mary Ann Elkin Pickrell, and together they had one child before her death. In 1843, Riddle re-married to Mary Jane Clark, with whom he had ten children. Riddle was a farmer in Sangamon County; in 1860, he owned $15,000 worth of real estate and $3,500 worth of personal property.
