Thomas Rucker married Diadamia Rucker (they shared a common ancestor) in Woodford County, Kentucky, and the couple had six children. They moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, in 1832. In 1860, Rucker was working as a farmer and had amassed $3,000 in real estate and $400 in personal property. Diadamia died in 1863 and Rucker remarried in 1869 to Julia A. Leonard.
