James A. D. Sconce began working as a druggist in Danville about 1844, partnered in a drug firm with William W. R. Woodbury in 1850, and sold his interest three years later. He served as Danville supervisor, 1851 to 1853, and as a trustee of Union Seminary. Sconce married Sarah Field in 1845. In 1850, he owned real estate valued at $1,500. Politically, he was a Whig.
