Shipley married Faithful Bryarly in Kentucky on November 29, 1816. The couple settled in Menard County, Illinois, in 1824. Starting in 1829, Shipley began purchasing public land, some of which Abraham Lincoln surveyed for him. William H. Herndon, Lincoln's law partner, served as the guardian of Shipley's children when he died in 1847.
