Chalmers M. Sherfy was a clerk, cashier, and banker. After spending his childhood in and near Hagerstown, Maryland, he moved to Perryville, Indiana, while a young man. He remained there for some decades and worked as a clerk before, when in the early 1850s, he relocated to Urbana, Illinois. He worked in Urbana first as a cashier for the Cattle Bank. He and D. Gardner later started their own banking firm, D. Gardner & Company, which Sherfy managed while also working as the bank's cashier. By 1860, he owned $8,000 in real estate and another $1,575 in personal property.
