Slinker moved from his native state to Barren County, Kentucky sometime before 1822. In 1822, Slinker married Elizabeth Bragg, with whom he had several children. In 1830, Slinker and his family moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, settling in portion of the county that would be subsumed into Menard County. He engaged in farming and milling in the area until 1849, when he and his family emigrated to Jasper County, Missouri.
