George W. Smith was a farmer and landowner in Vermilion County, Illinois. In 1837, he purchased approximately seven acres of public land north of Danville. Between 1843 and 1847, he acquired eighty acres in the southeastern corner of the county, south of Georgetown. In 1850, he owned real property valued at $1,150. In January 1852, he married Elizabeth "Betty" Hester. In 1860, Smith was living and farming in Elwood, Illinois, and owned real property valued at $8,080 and a personal estate of $1,577.
