Spears married Maria W. Stringer in 1824, with whom he had five children, and moved with his parents to what would become Tallula, Illinois, later that year. He owned about 3,000 acres in Menard County on which he built what may have been the county's first brick structure. He was a farmer who, in 1860, owned $16,020 in real estate and $6,762 in personal property.
