In 1810, Strawbridge immigrated to the United States with his father and siblings, including James and William. In 1823, the family settled in Sangamon County, Illinois, where Strawbridge became the first harness-maker in central Illinois. He also engaged in farming. Strawbridge never married. In 1860, he owned over $20,000 worth of real estate.
