Thomson was a merchant, farmer, and property owner in Bureau County, Illinois. He arrived in Bureau County sometime before 1840. In 1841 and 1848, Thomson won election to the County Commissioners' Court of Bureau County. In 1850, he was a merchant who owned property valued at $5,500. He was also active in Whig politics.
