Born in New Hampton, New Hampshire, Samuel P. Thompson was a shoemaker, merchant, farmer, and Republican. He married three times in his life: first to Mary Pool of Stoneham, Massachusetts, in September 1837, then to Ruhamah "Hannah" Blaisdell, and finally to Emeline Calehan in December 1854. He lived in Meredosia, Illinois, at least as early as 1840. In 1850, he was farming in Morgan County, Illinois, owned $7,000 in real property, and had three daughters. By 1860, he was still farming and owned $57,000 in real property and another $10,500 in personal property. During the campaign of 1860, Thompson, playing a snare drum, joined other men of Meredosia in a regional tour with the pro-Republican Wide Awake organization. He continued living in Meredosia through the end of the Civil War.
