Joseph F. Tilden was a farmer, merchant, livestock dealer, wool buyer, and shipper. Tilden married Clementine Lyman in 1828 and they had four children. After the marriage, the couple lived in Rochester, Vermont until 1840, when they moved Newbury, Vermont, where Tilden pursued agriculture. In 1850, he was farming in Newbury, but owned no real property. In 1854, Tilden moved to Galesburg, Illinois to join his son Josiah, who had moved to Galesburg in 1851. In 1860, he was a retired merchant and living with his son and owned real property valued at $4,000. Joseph remained in Galesburg until 1864, when he moved to Rochester, New York.
