In 1805, Vandeveer married Nancy French in Kentucky. Eventually, they had eleven children together. They moved to Indiana in 1814 and in October 1829, they settled in southeastern Sangamon County, Illinois. Vandeveer was a farmer and a minister in the Regular Baptist Church. In 1836, he ran for state representative from Sangamon County as a Democrat. In 1850, he owned $1,920 worth of real estate.
