Mary D. Strong was born in Clinton, New York. Her father was Theodore Strong, a prominent mathematician and professor of mathematics at Rutgers College. She married John Van Dyke on October 7, 1841, and had five children. In 1860, Mary was living with her family in Franklin Township in Somerset County, New Jersey.
