Vittum settled in Fulton County, Illinois, in December 1835 and started in the mercantile business, becoming one of the area's principal businessmen. In 1838, he married Celinda B. White, and together they had three children before her death in 1850. That same year, he remarried to Harriet S. Childs, with whom he had three children.
