Watkins moved to what became Menard County, Illinois, in 1821, and in 1832, he began acquiring large tracts of public lands in what would become the northwest part of the county. In 1850, Watkins was farming in Menard County and owned real estate valued at $3,000. By 1860, he owned real estate valued at $12,765 and had a personal estate of $3,240.
