Nathan P. West was a city government official, physician, and surveyor. In March 1840, he married Amanda M. Evans in Rochester, Illinois. In the early 1840s, West served as deputy surveyor for Sangamon County, Illinois. In March 1846, he received a medical degree from St. Louis University. From 1847 to 1850, West served on the Board of Trustees for the city of Decatur, Illinois, acting as clerk. He subsequently moved with his family to Texas. In 1850, he was living and practicing medicine in San Augustine, Texas. By 1860, West was practicing medicine in Newton County, Texas, and owned real property valued at $1,000 and a personal estate of $2,000.
