Witt was an early resident of the Lick Creek district of Sangamon County, Illinois. He married Mary Bilyeu in July 1838. Witt continued to live in Sangamon County until the 1840s, when he emigrated with his wife and five children to Miller County, Missouri, where he engaged in farming. In 1850, he owned real estate valued at $150. In 1860, he was working as a cooper in Glaze, Missouri, and owned real estate valued at $1,500 and had a personal estate of $580.
