Yocum moved as an infant from his native Virginia to Claiborn County, Tennessee. In 1810, Yocum and his mother moved to Madison County, Illinois. They subsequently relocated to Montgomery County and, in June 1819, to Sangamon County, Illinois, settling on Richland Creek in Salisbury Township. In 1824, Yocum married Sally Simmons, with whom he had eight children. Sally Yocum died in 1863, and in 1869, William married Mrs. Letitia Henderson.
