Young attended Phillips Exeter Academy and, in 1835, graduated from Bowdoin College. He studied law in Dover, New Hampshire and was admitted to the bar. He moved to Marshall, Illinois, in 1838, and opened a law office. Young served in the United States House of Representatives (1849-1851) as a Democrat. He took up farming in Clark County, Illinois, and in 1852, he served as a commissioner of the Springfield & Terre Haute Railroad.
