Shubal York was a physician in Paris, Illinois. He married Elizabeth Fisher in February 1841 in Vermillion County, Indiana. In 1860, the couple owned $2,00o in real estate and $2,000 in personal property and had six children. York served as surgeon for the Fifty-Fourth Illinois Regiment during the Civil War and attained the rank of major. He died at the hands of a mob of Charleston Copperheads shortly after completing a furlough in the spring of 1864.
