One of the original thirteen colonies, Massachusetts ratified the U.S. Constitution on February 6, 1788, becoming the sixth state in the Union. Massachusetts was the home of Abraham Lincoln's earliest American ancestors. Massachusetts was a free state and remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War. Its capital is Boston.
