In 1843, lawyer Charles J. Hughes, commissioner and future Missouri governor, commenced selling lots in the newly laid out town of Kingston, Missouri. Located in Northwest Missouri, the town was named in honor of Austin A. King, a circuit judge from Richmond, Missouri. At this time, the Caldwell County seat moved to Kingston. In 1844, county records transferred to the new courthouse in Kingston, a newly constructed log building.
