Norwich was founded in 1659 when English settlers purchased nine miles square of land from the Mohegan people. The U.S. Post Office Department established a post office in Norwich in 1782. The Connecticut General Assembly incorporated Norwich as a city in 1784. The city of Norwich consisted of several distinct portions, or villages, along the Shetucket and Yantic rivers. By 1866, the town encompassed twenty-six square miles.
