One of the original thirteen colonies, South Carolina ratified the U.S. Constitution on May 23, 1788, becoming the eighth state in the Union. South Carolina was a slave state and the leading political entity in both the Nullification and secession crises. Charleston was the state capital until it permanently moved to Columbia in 1786.
