Originally the site of a ferry across the Rock River—known first as Ogee's Ferry and then as Dixon's Ferry—Dixon became an incorporated town in 1837 and seat of Lee County in 1839. Never a large city during Abraham Lincoln's lifetime, it contained only four hundred people in 1845.
