On February 9, 1839, the Illinois General Assembly created DuPage County out of Cook County. The General Assembly appointed commissioners to locate a seat of justice for the new county, and in June 1839 said commissioners selected Naperville. Naperville remained the county seat until 1867, when it moved to Wheaton.
