Located in northeastern Illinois, Kankakee County was originally home to the Potawatomi Nation. White settlers began to arrive in 1832. On February 11, 1853, the Illinois General Assembly authorized the formation of Kankakee County. Its chosen county seat, Kankakee Depot, is now the city of Kankakee.
