Established by the Kentucky General Assembly on January 30, 1828, Brownsville is the county seat of Edmonson County. Situated along the Green River, the town experienced steady growth and prosperity until the Civil War. The sectional crisis and conflict ended the upward trajectory, but prosperity returned after the war.
