Located in northern Illinois roughly thirteen miles west of Ottawa, La Salle was platted in 1838 for the Illinois and Michigan Canal Commission. Sales of plots of land in La Salle helped finance the construction of the canal. The U.S. Post Office Department established a post office in La Salle in January 1838. Although the post office was changed to Peru, Illinois in 1848, the La Salle post office was reestablished in October 1849.
