Originally a French colony and fur trading post, Vincennes was the largest European settlement in Indiana. It became part of the British Empire after the Seven Years War and then part of the United States after the American Revolution, during which George Rogers Clark captured it from the British. Vincennes served as the first capitol of the Indiana Territory from 1800 to 1813 and later as the seat of Knox County.
