Located in north-central Illinois and named after the Ojibwa word for "good place," Minonk was established in 1854 by the Illinois Central Railroad. In June 1855, the U.S. Post Office Department changed a post office that it had established in Marshall County, Illinois in December 1854 to Woodford County, awarding it to Minonk.
