Located in central Illinois thirty miles south of Decatur, Pana was platted around 1854 for David A. Neal, then vice-president of the Illinois Central Railroad. In February 1855, the U.S. Post Office Department changed the post office in Stone Coal in Shelby County, Illinois to Pana.
