Located twelve miles northeast of Nashville, Illinois, Richview was originally laid out in 1839 by William B. Livesay as Richmond, Illinois. The U.S. Post Office Department established a post office at the site March 6, 1848. In 1852, the Illinois Central Railroad established Richview as one of its stations, and, in 1854, built a depot less than a mile northeast of the village. Richview became known as a business hub for the area due to the number of general stores, hotels, and other businesses it added as it developed and expanded.
