Previously settled by the Oneida peoples, the area that became Norwich saw its first white settlement in 1788. Additional Euro-American settlers arrived in late-1790 and the spring of 1791. In 1793, the New York State Legislature created the town of Norwich. Bordered by the Chenango River to the west and the Unadilla River in the east, the town was incorporated in 1816 and had a population of more than 4,000 by 1845. By 1851, it boasted many successful industries, including two flour mills, a steam-powered sawmill, two tanneries, an iron foundry, and multiple factories manufacturing carriages, tools, and household goods.
