Warsaw was laid out near Fort Edwards along the banks of the Mississippi River in the southern part of Hancock County, Illinois, across from the mouth of the Des Moines River. A post office was established in Warsaw in 1834, and the town was incorporated in 1839 when Abraham Lincoln was a member of the Illinois General Assembly.
