Cambridge, Missouri, is an extinct town in Saline County, Missouri. White settlers first inhabited the area that would become Cambridge in the mid-1840s. The U.S. Post Office Department established a post office in the area around 1845. Proprietors laid out the town in 1848. Situated on the Missouri River, Cambridge initially was an important town, serving as the principal transit point for Saline County. The location of the Chicago & Alton Railroad away from Cambridge and the establishment of other towns along the railroad hurt Cambridge, drawing business and population away to other localities. By the latter half of the nineteenth century, the town's population and business sector had dwindled to near extinction.
