South Bend, Indiana is located in far northern Indiana on the banks of the Saint Joseph River, roughly seventy miles northwest of Fort Wayne, Indiana. It is the county seat of Saint Joseph County. Euro-Americans established a trading post on the city's present site in 1820. The U.S. Post Office Department established a post office in the town in 1829. South Bend was incorporated as a town in 1835, then as a city in 1865.
