David A. Neal, then vice president of the Illinois Central Railroad Company, laid out the village of Onarga in 1854. The U.S. Post Office Department established a post office in the village March 24, 1854, incorrectly listing it as "Onargo." The Post Office corrected the name to Onarga in 1869.
