Flora is located in the southeastern portion of central Illinois just over thirty miles northeast of Mount Vernon, Illinois. The city was named after Flora Whittleby, the daughter of a member of the company that surveyed the site in 1854 for the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad. The U.S. Post Office Department established a post office in Flora in September 1855.
