Nevada City is the county seat and namesake of Nevada County in California. The Maidus and Nisenan tribes of California lived in the land that would later become Nevada County, although disease and forced relocation depopulated the area before major American settlement. Like much of California, Nevada City was created when miners moved into the area during the 1849 California Gold Rush. The first Euro-American settler in the area arrived in 1848 and the town grew rapidly, reaching a population of over 6,000 by March of 1850. The residents of the town changed the name from "Nevada" to "Nevada City" in 1861 to differentiate it from the Nevada Territory. Nevada City was a staunchly pro-Union town, giving about ninety percent of its vote to the Republican Party during the Civil War years.
