Saint Charles is located in northeastern Illinois, in Kane County, approximately thirty-seven miles west of Chicago. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Saint Charles in 1834. The earliest manufactories were a blacksmith shop (1835), a sawmill (1836), a wool-carding and cloth-dressing mill (1837), and brickmaking (1838). In February 1839, Saint Charles was incorporated as a city and received a U.S. Post Office.
