Abraham Lincoln to “Mr. Edwards,” [1836-1861]1
Will Mr Edwards please attend to this case,
and notify me?
A Lincoln1This note, entirely in Lincoln’s handwriting, is presumed to reference a legal case.
If so, it was most likely sent to Benjamin S. Edwards, who practiced law extensively throughout central Illinois, serving as attorney
in over 400 cases that also involved Lincoln. While Lincoln’s eventual brother-in-law
Ninian W. Edwards was also a lawyer, he spent much of his career in the legislature, in appointed government
positions, and as a bank director rather than practicing law.
