Sec 1[Section]. Be it enacted by the people of the State of Illinois represented in the General Assembly; That the Trustees of the Town of Shawneetown be, and they are hereby authorized to levey a tax on real property in said Town not exceeding one per cent, any law to the contrary notwithstanding.2
Sec 2 That the Trustees of the Town of Springfield be and they are hereby authorised and required to have all the foot walks paved with, brick around the public square not to Exceed twelve feet in width and they shall levy a tax upon all real Estate within the corporation of said town to an amount Sufficent to pay for completing the Same and they may hereafter have sutch other foot walks paved as they may see proper and levy a tax as above stated for the purpose of paying for completing the same the said trustees of the said town shall have the foot walks around the public square compleeted on or before the 1st day of October 18363

A Bill for An act to amend an Act entitled “An act to amend an act concerning the trustees of Shawneetown, and for other purposes
1On January 14, 1836, William J. Gatewood in the Senate introduced the petition of the trustees and various citizens of Shawneetown, requesting passage of a law increasing taxation within the corporation to at least one percent. The Senate referred the petition to a select committee. In response to this petition, Gatewood of the select committee introduced SB 104 in the Senate on January 14. The Senate passed the bill the same day. On January 16, the House of Representatives amended the bill by striking out the second section. The House then passed the bill by a vote of 39 yeas to 1 nays, with Abraham Lincoln voting yea. The House then amended the title of the bill by striking out the words “and for other purposes.” The Senate took no further action on the bill.
