AN ACT to amend an act entitled an act to amend an act entitled “an act to provide for the application of the interest
of the fund arising from the sale of the school lands belonging to the several townships
in this State”, approved 1st March 1833, approved February 7th, 1837.

Sec.[Section] 1. Be it enacted by the people of the State of Illinois represented in the General Assembly, That the seventh section of the act to which this is an amendment, shall be held to extend to, and embrace every case
where any number of the inhabitants of any one or more congressional townships have
themselves associated, or may hereafter associate themselves together for the purchase
of any quantity of land not exceeding ten acres, for the encouragement of learning,
and the conveyance for such lands shall be made to the trustees of school lands in
the townships in which said land lies, by their corporate name, and shall be held
by said corporation for the use of the persons associating themselves together as
aforesaid, and their successors and assigns forever.2

1On February 13, 1837, Nathaniel Parker introduced SB 186, originally titled “A Bill to Distribute the Surplus Revenue of this State and for
Other Purposes,” in the Senate. The Senate referred the bill to a select committee. The select committee reported
back the bill on March 1 with amendments, in which the Senate concurred. On March
2, the Senate passed the bill as amended, amending the title so as to read, “A Bill
to Amend ‘An Act Entitled, ‘An Act to Provide for the Application of the Interest of the Fund
Arising from the Sale of the School Lands Belonging to the Several Townships in this
State, Approved March 1, 1833,’ Approved February 7th 1835.’” That same day, the House of Representatives passed the bill without further amendment. On March 4, theCouncil of Revision approved the bill, and the act became law.

2Section seven of the act allowed inhabitants of townships to associate together for school purposes. The 1835
act repealed two sections and clarified other sections of the 1833 act.
