1On January 18, 1837, William Thomas introduced SB 94, originally titled “A Bill to Establish Free Schools Throughout the State,” in the Senate. The Senate tabled the bill and ordered printed 200 copies. On January 30, the Senate took up the bill and referred it to the Committee on Seminaries, School Lands, and Education. The Committee on Seminaries, School Lands, and Education reported back the bill on February 11, and the Senate referred it to the Committee of the Whole. The Senate released the Committee of the Whole from further consideration, and tabled the bill. On March 3, the Senate took up the bill and referred it to a select committee. The select committee reported back the bill on the same day with an amendment, in which the Senate concurred. The Senate passed the bill as amended, amending the title so as to read “A Bill Supplemental to an Act Entitled ‘An Act to Protect the Canal Lands Against Trespassers.” On March 4, the House of Representatives passed the bill. On March 4, the Council of Revision approved the bill, and the act became law.
