For an act to relocate and provide for the Penitentiary
Sec[Section] 1 Be it enacted by the people of the State of Illinois represented in the General assembly thatJames Craig, John D [Crook?] & John Dawson be and they are hereby appointed Commissioners who or a majority of them shall meet in the Town of Alton on the first Monday in May next or within two months thereafter, and after taking an oath before some Judge or other person duly authorised to administer oaths faithfully and impartially to discharge the duties required of them by this act shall proceed to examine the present site of the Penitentiary of this state and if in their opinion the present location is a good one, they shall proceed to an examination of the Penitentiary Buildings, cells, walls &c[etc] and report to the next general assembly what sum will be required to render said Penitentiary a safe receptacle1 for convicts
Sec 2 In case the said commissioners shall be of opinion that the present Location of the Penitentiary is not a good one, they shall then proceed to examine such other situations as may be likely to afford a better location and particularly in the vicinity of Alton, exeter in Scott county and such other selections as they may feel necessary and report to the next general assembly their proceedings herein together with such facts as in their opinion may be calculated to give

information on this Subject
Sec 3 The wardens of the Penitentiary are hereby authorised to employ an additional guard for every convict ten convicts for whom there are no cells in the Prison
Sec 4 Be it further enacted that the security Dollars be and the same is hereby appropriated to defray the charge of the aditional Guards for the Penitentiary to be [disposed?] for by the warden as other appropriations be for the Penitentiary, [have been?] [...?], and the further sum of six Hundred Dollars be and the same is hereby appropriated to Defray the expenses and compensation to the commissioners appointed under the first section of this act and that they shall receive the same per Diem allowance and mileage as is allowed to members of this General assembly
Sec 5 that so much of the 5th section of an act entitled “an act in relation to the Penitentiary” approved March 2nd 1829 as makes a deduction from the salary of the warden of thirty Dollars for every convict escaping from said penitentiary; be and the same is hereby repealed
