AN ACT to change the name of the town of Mechanicsburg, in St. Clair county.

Proviso.
Sec.[Section] 1. Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly, That the town of Mechanicsburg, in the county of St. Clair, which has been laid off agreeably to law, and a plat thereof recorded pursuant to the statute in such cases, shall be, and is hereby, changed to that of Muscautah; by which latter name it shall be known and called in all public records; and in all legal transactions where it may be necessarry to name said town, the name of Muscautah shall be used; Provided, however, That the change of the name of said town shall in nowise affect any contracts or conveyances heretofore made, or any other legal transactions whatever.
Sec. 2. This act shall take effect from and after its passage.

1John Thomas presented a petition of citizens of St. Clair county to the House of Representatives from January 23, 1839, requesting the town of Mechanicsburg change its name. Thomas introduced HB 212 on January 25. The House passed the bill on February 9 and added “in St. Clair County” to the title. The Senate passed the bill on February 14. The Council of Revision approved the bill on February 16 and the act became law.
