Sec[Section] 1 Be it enacted by the people of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly, That Joel Wright, Lathrop W. Curtis, Nathan Jones, N. G. Berryman, Robert Stuart, Royal Wright, Isaiah Stillman, Thomas D. Lord, Samuel G. Wright and Samuel B. Owings, their associates and successors, be, and they are, hereby created a body corporate,
to be styled and known by the name and style of the Trustees of the Canton College of Illinois, and by that name to remain and have perpetual succession, with full power to acquire
by donation, purchase, or devise, and to hold and transfer property, real, personal
and mixed; by that name to make contracts, to sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded
in any court of competent jurisdiction, and in their corporate capacity, to make,
have and use a common seal, and the same to break, alter or destroy at pleasure.
Sec 2 The said Trustees shall have power to increase their own number in any manner and
at any time, that they may deem right and proper, to any number not exceeding twenty-five;
and for the perpetuation of their own corporate existence, to fill all vacancies that
may occur in said board by death, resignation or otherwise.
Sec. 3 No person shall be considered honorary graduates, of the aforesaidCollege, nor be entitled to a diploma as such, unless the applicant for such honorary degree,
shall be found on examination by the board authorized to be

appointed by the fifth section of the act hereinbefore referred to, worthy, and in
possession of learning equal to that which is required on the part of the regular
graduates of said College, any thing in the fifth section of said act to the contrary notwithstanding.
Sec 4 The first section of the act entitled “an act to incorporate the Canton College of Illinois ,” approved February eighth, 1837, is hereby repealed; provided that nothing herein
contained shall be so construed, as to invalidate any proceedings of the Trustees
appointed by the said first section of the aforesaid act; but the acts done by the
said Trustees, under the authority of said act, and the rights thereby acquired, are
hereby ratified and confirmed, as fully as if the same had been done strictly in conformity
with the provisions of said act.
Sec. 5 This act to be in force from and after its passage.
