Sec[Section] 1 Be it enacted by the people [?] of Illinois represented in the General [Assembly] That [?] who shall [?] in this state [?] shall be [?] by the grand Jury of the county [?] was committed, and on conviction [?] forfeit and pay a fine of not [?] hundred dollars, not less than ten [?] use of the school fund of said county, [?]ed any term not exceeding thirty day[?] in the county jail [?] the penalty aforesaid, if upon [?] acquainted with the facts, the judges shall decide [?] is a legal voter. Com [Committee] on Elections
1William Edmonston of the Committee on Elections, to which the House of Representatives had referred two resolutions, introduced HB 70 in the House on December 22, 1838.
On January 3, 1839, the House referred the bill to the Committee on the Judiciary.
The Committee on the Judiciary reported back the bill on January 16 with amendments,
in which the House concurred. The House further amended the bill by adding an additional
section and by amending the first section. Representatives offered additional amendments,
and on January 21, the House referred the bill and proposed amendments to a select
committee. The select committee reported back the bill on January 25 with amendments,
in which the House concurred. The House passed the bill as amended on February 9.
On February 18, the Senate tabled the bill.
